The Luohu border point between Hong Kong and Shenzhen seems to be a favorite spot for smuggling products into China.
Hong Kong is a free port with no duty on many product categories. And there is no VAT, whereas China imposes a 17% VAT. I guess this difference is too tempting.
Whenever I take the MTR (ex-East Rail KCR), I see people who get on board at the last station in HK with heavy packages. Hongkongers have protested against this, and it seems the Chinese are going to take measures.
The most surprising is that the smugglers are not even trying to hide. Here are a couple of photos that I took on the Chinese side.
The next time a Customs officer wants to X-ray my bag, I will ask him why he is wasting his time with me…

Funny article.
just speak Cantonese or mandarin when you meet customs officer, tell them no need to check your bag. I think they are very busy to check other smugglers, they have no time to speak English with foreigners.

Yes… And the point is, they don’t even check the smugglers…

So many diaper smugglers! I wonder why they don’t smuggle something of greater value…
Renaud Anjoran says
It might be diapers and baby milk powder… But I would guess there is a lot of electronic products, too.
